Another Opening, Another Show!
Written by Cath Moyse - Tue 10th Aug 2021
Due to wind and rain the rehearsal was relocated from Bob and Maureen’s garden to the barn at Hare Leys Farm, but I am assured that the weather will be fine and sunny for the weekend.
The show is the usual mixture of songs, dances, poems and sketches with a good spattering of topical references to COVID and EWR thrown in. I found myself tapping my foot to the catchy song and dance routine “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B”. The first act ends with a message of hope that “things will get better” with the ensemble harmonising beautifully in “We’ll meet again”, a cheeky wave and a promise to return after the interval.
Act two starts with a medley of songs with a sunshine theme, and true to form the clouds parted and the sun shone (albeit briefly). Andy and Nicky remind us of how courting should be done, with not a mobile phone or dating app in sight. John’s comic poem “Magna Charter” gives us an alternative version of the events at Runnymede in 1215 and there is a very funny sketch in French with live translator. LVP’s lovely rendition of “I know him so well” features an octet of ladies each regretting their loss of the perfect man.
The Melodrama is an old fashioned story of the lives and loves of the snobbish upper class. There are plenty of opportunities to boo and hiss the villain and cheer the hapless hero in true panto fashion.
If you enjoy a mixture of light entertainment in the beautiful surroundings of a quintessential English garden, then you’re in for a treat this weekend.
Tickets are available to purchase online and cost £10 for adults and £5 for children (Eventbrite booking fee applies). Pre-show and interval refreshments are available to purchase in advance or on the day - contactless payment preferred please.
All profits raised from this show will be donated to The Hummingbird Centre in Launton, which offers support to Cancer patients and their carers and families. For more information about The Hummingbird Centre please visit their website here.
